In the Presbyterian church, the session's responsibilities include the pastoral care of the congregation, Christian education, stewardship and mission, and administering the sacraments (communion and baptism). Session meets monthly. The clerk of session is responsible for maintaining the church records, but several elders assist with various tasks involving the baptismal and marriage registers, the roll of communicant members, minutes of session meetings, list of households, etc. Families and individuals in the congregation are divided into elders' districts; each elder strives to maintain relationships with the people in their district, and notify the minister of any pastoral concerns. A representative elder is chosen each year to serve (along with the minister) as a member of the Barrie Presbytery which meets monthly. Ministers and elders also occasionally have the opportunity to attend meetings of General Assembly (a national gathering) or the Synod, and to participate in committees.
